Psychosomatics: The Interplay of Body and Mind

Psychosomatics is concerned with the relationship between psychological and physical processes. It emphasises the interaction between mind and body, and how psychological factors can lead to physical symptoms and illness — but equally how physical problems can lead to psychological ones.

Definition and Concept

Psychosomatics is an interdisciplinary field that explores the relationship between psyche and body. It is based on the premise that psychological factors — such as trauma, stress, anxiety or depressive mood — can cause or at least influence physical symptoms and illness. The concept of psychosomatics thus takes a holistic view of the person and assumes that physical and psychological aspects are deeply interconnected.

Psychosomatic Complaints

  1. Stress-related conditions: Psychological stress can lead to a wide range of physical complaints, such as headaches, digestive problems, sleep disturbances, skin rashes or cardiovascular complaints. These complaints can be caused by the release of stress hormones and the activation of the autonomic nervous system.

  2. Somatoform disorders: In somatoform disorders, physical symptoms arise for which no medical cause can be found. The complaints are nevertheless real and can severely disrupt the lives of those affected. Examples include somatoform pain disorder or irritable bowel syndrome.

  3. Psychosomatic conditions: In psychosomatic conditions, psychological factors play a significant role in their development and maintenance. A well-known example is irritable stomach or irritable bowel syndrome, where psychological stress leads to gastrointestinal complaints. Asthma or certain skin conditions can also be psychosomatically influenced.

Treatment Options

Psychosomatic conditions, or conditions with a psychosomatic component, should be treated from both the physical and the psychological side. As a licensed healing practitioner and Somatic Experiencing (SE)® therapist, I bring this dual perspective to every treatment.

Summary

Psychosomatics is concerned with the interplay of psychological and physical processes. Psychological burdens can lead to a wide range of physical complaints and illnesses. Treatment of psychosomatic complaints in my practice encompasses psychotherapeutic approaches, relaxation techniques and natural medicine. A holistic view of the person — taking into account both psychological and physical aspects — is essential for effective treatment. By addressing psychological burdens and promoting physical and emotional wellbeing, psychosomatic complaints can be eased or even resolved.

Psychosomatic complaints often arise in connection with anxiety, depression or unprocessed trauma. Chronic stress and dissociation can also produce physical symptoms that cannot be explained organically.
