Depression

Depression is a mental illness that manifests as persistent low mood, loss of interest, lack of energy and sleep disturbances. It profoundly affects a person’s vitality — their capacity for joy, motivation and energy.

Symptoms and Signs

Depression can be characterised by a wide range of symptoms, including feelings of sadness, loss of interest in normal activities, exhaustion, no desire to do anything, sleep disturbances, memory problems, difficulty concentrating and changes in weight. In more severe cases there can also be suicidal thoughts or actions. A common symptom is the complete loss of access to one’s own feelings.

Causes

The causes of depression can be varied and are often a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. These include genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, stress, loss, trauma and family history. Notably, the word “depression” literally means pressing down. A common cause of depressive mood can be the sustained suppression of life impulses.

Treatment

There are many promising treatment options for depression: psychotherapy, new habits, exercise, and in some cases medication. A combination of several approaches can be particularly effective.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy can be a valuable support in the treatment of depression. Various approaches can be used, and the right choice depends on the individual needs and circumstances of the person concerned. As a licensed healing practitioner and Somatic Experiencing (SE)® therapist, I draw on both conversation and my comprehensive knowledge of natural medicine.

Changing Behaviour and Habits

Simple changes can help to ease depression. These include regular exercise, a healthy diet, sufficient sleep, and maintaining social relationships. This may of course not be easy, as it takes energy and confidence to change one’s own behaviour. Here, very small steps are big steps — and you do not have to manage them alone.

Conclusion

Depression is a serious illness that affects many people. It is important to seek professional help — despite feelings of shame, and even if you are unsure whether it “really is depression”. Causes can be biographical, social, physical or unknown. In any case, you are worth getting help when things are not going well.

Depression often goes hand in hand with anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms or unprocessed trauma. Sometimes there is also complex PTSD underlying a persistent low mood.
