Body-Oriented Therapy

Body-Oriented Therapy

Body-oriented therapy is a form of psychotherapy that pays attention to the body and its signals. It is about recognising and using the unity between body and mind.

In body-oriented therapy it is assumed that unprocessed emotional experiences are stored in the body and can manifest there — for example as pain, tension or blockages, but also as responses of the digestive, nervous and hormonal systems. These signals from the body are very valuable as they provide access to unconscious or suppressed issues.

There are many different forms of body-oriented therapy, such as body psychotherapy or yoga. Most approaches combine physical exercises, breath work and verbal exchange to enable a deeper understanding and integration of emotional experiences.

Body-oriented therapy can be helpful for a wide range of psychological and emotional problems — such as anxiety and depression, burnout, overwhelm and stress, trauma and relationship difficulties. It can also help to better understand and regulate the body and emotions, which can lead to greater self-confidence and self-acceptance.
